Remembering “Uncle Shane”: A Simple, Rich Life with a Powerful Legacy

We mourn the passing of Drawing Wisdom's founding President, a proud Knowledge Keeper who brought warmth, gentleness and generosity to all his interactions.

“When the Thunderbird moves…” That’s how it was with Uncle Shane: he would easily drop into beautiful conversation weaving teachings and language so all of us could remember where we come from, who we belong to. He was filled with awe and humour; he was the best of us. He lived a simple and rich life and left such a powerful legacy. Uncle Shane had this way of making anyone he was speaking with feel totally seen and totally special. What a gift to have been loved by him.

Along with being Drawing Wisdom’s founding board member, a commitment he made without hesitation, he was also the resident Elder and knowledge keeper with Courage Consulting. I loved bringing him into my work because it made my life and my work better; I used to phone him when I felt like I was losing my footing and without ever correcting or shaming me, we would listen and then say, “That’s awesome. It reminds me of…” and he’d share some generous teaching to ground me and bring me back into kindness.

Many of us will feel lost without him and sharing stories of what we learned from him is how we ensure he lives on. Our teachings tell us that he is happy in the Spirit World. I believe that. It is only sad for us, but our responsibility is to begin our healing, live honestly and remember natsamaat (we are one).
